Rice and Lentils Soup (Makes 4 servings)

Put lentils, half an onion, carrot and celery in a saucepan full of cold water. Bring to a boil and add salt. Cook for about 25 minutes over medium heat.
In another saucepan sauté half an onion, garlic, ham and, after a few minutes, tomato sauce, salt and pepper. After a few minutes add rice. Cook rice adding water or lentils broth little by little and cook for about 20 minutes. Add drained lentils and cook for 10 minutes. Dust with pecorino cheese before serving.
